Sticking the code into the web page was a snap, and as I recall PPal had some neat tools for multi-product buys. Building the check-out cart, thing. At that time, the transaction fee was about 1.5 percent. Don't know what it is now. I would say look at the services with a few things in mind: (1) the future? What if we want to start charging for sfComplex t-shirts, mugs and downloaded videos of an Owen Densmore lecture all in one transaction event? (2) how easy is it to have the code generated to just copy-and-paste into the web page? (3) is the system easily scalable and what and where are the backups? (4) How much information is copied back to the buyer/contributor? For what it's worth, I'm about to move my personal account and the IAJ account out of LANB because it has an impossible-to-use web site and has failed to update the interface technology in more than four or five years. I have had conversations about this with friends highly placed in the bank and its president, but to no avail. They just don't get the importance and value of strong, updated GUIs. Nice people all, but they just lack savvy in this aspect. Not that this has anything to do with a PPal link, but.... -tj On Sat, May 31, 2008 at 7:58 PM, Stephen Guerin wrote: > > We're setting up the ability to accept credit cards online for donations > and > recurrent memberships. This means that those of you receiving this notice and planning to attend the Complex's official opening on June 14 are requested to bring a food contribution to be shared with all attendees. If you are up to your neck in alligators at work or simply don't feel comfortable in the food arena, a monetary contribution is also a possibility. For those bringing food, here are a few ground rules: 1) It should be finger food-- nothing requiring utensils to eat. Examples: finger sandwiches, crostini, cheese with crackers or baguette slices, non-drippy fruit in bite-size pieces. 2) It should not be messy -- no stews or soups. Chips are okay, dips are not. Spreadable things, like soft cheeses, should be fine. 3) The complex will provide serving platters and utensils so that people don't have to worry about keeping track of their stuff. The complex will also provide beverages. 4)In order to prevent our ending up with 25 bags of chips and nothing else, please e-mail me at dede at backspaces.net to let me know what you plan to bring. For those making a monetary contribution, suggested donation is $10, minimum is $5. Please have your donations in Don's hands by June 7. Obviously, if you don't feel you can contribute anything right now, come to the opening anyway. Your presence will be a contribution to its success. Any questions can be addressed to me or to opening committee chairperson Orlando Leibovitz. Thank you for your help. He's doing some early cool work with Isadora: http://www.troikatronix.com/isadora.html Dylan showed some quick work doing web image processing tracking colored fiducials and sound triggering that may augment Orlando's music visualization. Owen, you may interested to check it out Isadora. It has another graphical pipe system like MaxMSP we've been talking about for Project "Pipedream". Dylan, Pipedream is a common communication protocol we're developing so that all sensors and actuators can be subscribed and published to in the Complex. We're currently considering OSC as the common protocol. Browsing through the isadora forums it looks like OSC communication to Processing should be straightforward. This looks like a great addition to the artistic production pipeline! Welcome, Dylan! -Stephen --- -. . ..-. .. ... .... - .-- --- ..-. .. ... .... But transforming the warehouse at Baca Street and Cerrillos Road would take a hefty investment, and the City Council seems divided on whether a current proposal is the right way to proceed. Councilors who sit on the Finance Committee are slated to talk later this month about an idea to use $600,000 for renovations that would get the project started. Last week, it got a chilly reception from the Public Works Committee, which voted to move the resolution forward with no recommendation. The idea for the city to build some kind of community arts area has surfaced at City Hall before. Backers have called it a beehive, a hub, an incubator and now, the Railyard Center for Arts + Creativity. Although dozens of prospective developers and business owners have toured the massive warehouse that formerly housed La Puerta Originals, none have made offers to the city's land manager. That's why Creative Santa Fe wants to take control. The nonprofit with city support has crafted a business plan to use the space to promote the arts. In addition to the city's initial contribution, the group proposes to secure other private and public funding for startup money. It is also asking the city to help with rent for the first two to three years, after which revenues will balance operating costs. Programs in the 11,700-square-foot structure would include economic-development activities such as workshops, and a "creative business resource center," according to the plan. Slightly more than half the building's space would be leased to arts and community organizations to provide income for operations and program support. A "creative business office hub" would have wireless Internet, shared office equipment and meeting spaces. The proposal does not sit well with Councilor Miguel Chavez, who worked last year on a similar project that would have been a partnership with a couple who built art galleries on the Railyard. The proposed Railyard Arts Market was aimed to function more like a retail or gallery space for local artisans. The endeavor had already secured $150,000 of state money when Rose and John Utton withdrew from their initial plan to use part of a new building. Instead, their Truro LLC proposed to redevelop the former La Puerta building. The plan dropped out of the scene when other city councilors did not approve Chavez's request for money from the city's 2008 capital infrastructure improvements bonds. But that's exactly the source of money that other councilors have now targeted to pay for the proposed arts facility. More than $1 million formerly budgeted from that fund for parks maintenance was freed for other uses when voters approved a large park financing plan and property tax increase this spring. Chavez said it's unclear why the plan has support now. He said it's a bad idea in light of the City Council's recent vote to expand the Police Department via a hiring freeze. "It's a double standard and double-talk and contradictions," he said Monday. "It's way too expensive and it's going to depend heavily on the city. It's going to have to be subsidized, and I don't see how it is going to fit in." While resolution sponsor Councilor Rebecca Wurzburger had support from Ron Trujillo at last Tuesday's Public Works Committee vote, Councilors Rosemary Romero and Chris Calvert opposed it, a deadlock that resulted in no opinion from the committee. Romero said she did not find the proposal fiscally responsible and didn't see a track record for Creative Santa Fe. "It has all the right components in many ways, but it is not all there," said Romero. "Is it the right group and project? I don't feel that it is. I would like to focus on success and put all the elements in to really create success." Wurzburger said she also had questions about the business plan from Creative Santa Fe, but wants the city to make a commitment to creative economic development on the Railyard. Calvert said it seemed the project could overlap with the city's plan to open a retail space for local artists in the new convention center, which opens this fall. He is also backing another use for the bond money that is now available: a proposal from the mayor to spend the money on street and sidewalk rehabilitation. That idea has not yet had a committee hearing. The creativity center has backing from several in the arts community, including from Richard Fischoff, who runs the Farrell Fischoff contemporary art gallery on Second Street. "We have a fantastic resource, better than oil and gas, it's all the creativity of the people who live here," said Fischoff. "This is a center for artists and creative people. It's not a tourist destination." Artist Danielle Shelley, who shows her oil paintings in his gallery, said the center would be vital part of the city's art scene, as a place artists can exchange ideas and get support. Shelley said she has studio space for herself, but knows of many artists who struggle just to find a place to work or who could offer other services such as classes. The city's property manager, The Santa Fe Railyard Community Corp., continues to show the building to interested parties, said director Richard Czoski. Since the city leased the building to the group, any creativity center project would entail a sublease, he said. The city purchased the Railyard with the idea of balancing community spaces and commercial enterprises that could repay debt for the land. The community corporation is responsible to make that plan work. --- -. . ..-. .. ... .... - .-- --- ..-. .. ... .... It seems to much of a national term and government focused. While some of us are involved in work that involves "Public Policy" issues, I think identifying with the term connotes too much of a think tank that writes position papers for the government. I'm sure there are varying definitions of public policy but this quick google brings back: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-public-policy.htm Public policy is an attempt by the government to address a public issue. The government, whether it is city, state, or federal, develops public policy in terms of laws, regulations, decisions, and actions. There are three parts to public policy-making: problems, players, and the policy. We'll print the invite in-house to start handing them out immediately. We'll use the outside service for the simple brochure. That reminds me of an addition to the materials list: convert the invite to a one-pager for billboard posting. I'll do that after finalizing the invite card. -d- On Jun 4, 2008, at 8:42 AM, Orlando Leibovitz wrote: > There is a six working day turn around time if we use an outside > company to to print this piece. Which argues for emphasizing the community aspects of the complex over the art, science, technology, public policy, or any other more focused goals. We are, or should be, more interested in getting people together to see what can happen, than in restricting our audience by being too specific about what might be done. We have flyers and invitation card for June 14 at 632 for anyone who would like to hand them out or post them in their local venues. I am also attaching a flyer if you want to print or email it. We have passed our zoning & fire inspections and are getting appraisal values from the artists for insurance. We'll get the business license Monday after the fire dept. enters the data for our inspection. Anchor bolts are being installed for the art & LCD screen hanging system Simon designed. The cross-members will be added today & Monday. Steve Smith is loaning us two large 50-Inch DLP Rear-Projection HDTV w/ LED Illumination for the opening. Hogle is loaning lighting. We're still working on sound, a new screen for Noisefold's performance, and severaal other things on Simon's list. We expect to be in Pasatiempo & the Free Press next week, as well as Santa Fe Radio Cafe on KSFR. We also have an ad in the Eldorado Sun (thanks to Roy for directing us to the Santa Fe Alliance for this opportunity). Add'l media coverage is coming. A newcomer to our ranks, Juan Torres, is offering his Chicago-area TV & videography skills to us to develop promotional videos. (Thanks to Steve Smith for this serendipitous connection.) We expect members of Rep. Udall's staff to attend & are working on other invitations. Please reply to Dede's email regarding potluck for the catering at the opening. If we can't fill the menu, we'll have to spend precious $$$s on refreshments. Thanks to Dede, Simon & Orlando for working so hard to keep the costs down for the opening. Because they've been able to get donated and loaned material, we're still under $1000 for cash expenses to date. (Buying refreshments in lieu of potluck could double that figure.) Speaking of money, we are working on a PayPal account to replace the Community Foundation donation page as the foundation no longer offers this support option. When that is complete, we'll launch our long- delayed fundraising drive. In the meantime, I will send a Dear Santa email shortly with a list of much-needed items you might have available for donation around the house. Thanks to all for helping make this event a go. -d- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He has a gift for looking at complex issues with a simple model, and delivering a wonderful and profound narrative of the model's results. Steve has a good feel for this as well, especially from the Bios work. Josh's book is likely to be brilliant. The two lectures I sat in on (I missed one of them) were dramatic .. mainly in the simple evolution of the model design and the narrative of its unfolding explanations. The reason I mention this is that we need you to help define policy issues and how to distill them down to their essence. We can then go forward defining modeling approaches. Then Policy can be part of our core work. Just as an insight: Mike Agar had budget for a model in the drug trade a few years ago. The area to be studied was drug economy. Well, what's unique about the drug trade? Several items: - Its illegal. So what does that imply? It turns out to set up a hierarchy where the real drug boss is nearly invisible, very quickly handing off the real work. Thus the "life cycle" of the economy includes possessing two things: money and drugs. The drugs are possessed by the boss for a very minimal time .. and are handed off to minions (runners) to handle as quickly as possible. - Its spacial: The trade goes on "in the streets". The drug runner gets money to buy the drugs from a source, then travels to the buyer holding the drugs, then sells the drugs to the user. That triangle exposes risk only while the runner is holding, and then only a risk to the boss if he squeals. - Cops have the right to stop and search, and can travel within the runner's world. They can arrest the runner only while he's holding. ... and so on. So you get the idea of the vital core issues of the drug trade, and what you can toss in terms of a first approximation. What similar story lies behind Policy? What is its life cycle. Where are the benefits and dangers to the players? Is there a "currency"? Josh (and the Bios crew) and others have spent as much time looking at sociology, anthropology and ethnography as they have in actual modeling technology. I think you can start thinking in this explicit but non-tech way and come up with several winners if you'd like. Also check out what others have done. See where they have gone and what we can infer from their approaches. And have a lot of fun too! -- Owen From PPARYSKI at aol.com Sat Jun 7 17:11:03 2008 From: PPARYSKI at aol.com (PPARYSKI at aol.com) Date: Sat, 7 Jun 2008 13:11:03 EDT Subject: [sfx: Discuss] Re: Policy and Modeling Message-ID: Thanks Owen, I had intended to attend Josh sessions, but somehow they slipped by with getting ready for the opening and car problems. 4)In order to prevent our ending up with 25 bags of chips and nothing else, please reply to this e-mail to let me know what you plan to bring. In hot desks, unique meeting rooms and collaboration zones, souk members brainstorm, present or simply hunker down and work. Connection & Support You never know who you might bump into at souk, a co-working environment for Portland's creative class. Make valuable business contacts or bounce an idea off another member to crack that problem. Capitalize on many coordinated networking and learning opportunities. Only need to meet downtown? Take your team away from the grind to meet for an hour or all day in our creative meeting rooms. The Future of Work souk believes space matters. Where and how you want to work has changed. souk acknowledges its set-up is different because the world demands it. With scarce natural resources, intense use of existing space is imperative. Circle math is about starting from nothing (or not much) and exploring strange and beautiful ideas with nothing more than marker and board. Think of it as build-it-yourself math. Sometimes we will start with a game--or play a game the whole session. Or learn how to see the world as a Flatlander from the Second Dimension would. Math circles are a place for spirited play with the patterns of math and games of ideas. Math circles are absolutely nothing like the rigid lockstep of school math's drill through technique after technique. What if everything you think you know about math is wrong?
